OUT OF THE WOODS is a meditation on the inherent connection that exists between our elders and our old growth trees, while illuminating the increasingly tenuous relationship between us and the forests; specifically the Canadian West Coast rainforests of British Columbia. The film is a lush, lyrical collage of imagery and sound featuring the wisdom, work and art of a variety of West coast elders who have come “out of the woods”. Bus Griffiths born in 1913, has been a boxer, wrestler, logger, cartoonist and story-teller, and has documented his life as a logger in the 1930’s in his graphic novel “Now You're Logging.” Merve Wilkinson also born in 1913, is an ex-logger, eco-forester and educator who runs the oldest managed eco-forest on the west coast of North America. Merve has been managing his 137 acre Vancouver Island forest in a sustainable way for over 70 years. George Sawchuk, born in 1927 is an ex-logger and chainsaw revolutionary artist who has created a “forest installation” that echoes his politics and working life in the bush. And Betty Krawczyk, born in 1928, is an uncompromising environmentalist and political prisoner who has spent a total of 3 years of her life in the maximum security prisons of British Columbia fighting to protect the ‘public’ forests of British Columbia.
OUT OF THE WOODS is a political 'shout out' from our elders, as the rich history, diversity, economic stability and the very seeds of our existence embodied in the old growth forests are in the process of being liquidated for short term corporate gain – Unless we do something about it NOW!
