Growth Rings: Elders of the West Coast Woods

This lyrical, collage style documentary will feature the wisdom, work and art of three elder woodsmen: Bus Griffiths, 90, retired logger and visual artist; Merve Wilkinson, 89, logger, eco-forester and educator; and George Sawchuk, 76, logger and chainsaw revolutionary artist. The focus of this unusual logger's legacy will explore the roots and future of our evolving relationship with the elderly and the natural world. Each of these three woodsmen posses a sense of humour, wisdom and a youthful energy that make them charming, funny and compelling subjects. As old-time loggers, they offer a perspective, knowledge and first hand experience of the forest that has been virtually clear-cut from contemporary consciousness and culture. In an ever expanding eco-conscious world, the term 'logger' has become a dirty word. When the forests seemed vast and endless there were no questions as to the rightful place of these hewers of wood. These were tough men who worked a hard and dangerous job and who, for the most part, ironically loved the forests they were slowly destroying.
